Little Penguin…

Over the last few weeks I have been taking advantage of a really GREAT locals only program at Park City Mountain Resort (Start Now)-  http://startnow.parkcitymountain.com/site/index.html. It allows those who don’t know how to ski or snowboard take advantage of lessons with Park City’s quality instructors. You get a 3 hour lesson, gear rental, and lift pass for up to five times – how can you not take advantage of that right?

My first lesson was quite the experience. Before we even began.. my feet started to go numb. I asked one of the guys working in the rental shop if that was ‘normal’.. he looked at me funny and then replied “no, it shouldn’t be doing that.” So my friend Jenny and I just assume it’s cause we aren’t used to the boots. We work through the pain and attempt our first lesson. I felt bad for our instruction (Martin Drayton) because.. 1. Jenny and I are quite the pair and teaching both of us to do something new at the same time must have been a nightmare. 2. We were both in complete agony with the stupid boots. and 3. It took us the whole day to grasp the concept of having both feet strapped into the same object. By the end of our lesson we had a lot of fun and were definitely coming back.. except next time we would get a bigger boot.

We return for day 2 and I ask for a half size bigger on the boot.. walk around in them for a while and have the same issue of my feet going numb so I go back in and ask for a full size bigger than what I would normally wear. I made it through most of the day without pain.. however toward the last half hour the numbness set in for me again.. WTF is going on with these boots? Aren’t snowboard boots supposed to be comfortable?

This was also the day our instructor (Martin) deemed me as the ‘Little Penguin’ – I couldn’t grasp the concept of having my arms out further from my sides (because I was concentrating on so many other things) and because my gloves are black on the bottom I looked like a little snowboarding penguin.. the name stuck.  Jenny gave up half way into the lesson because of the shooting pain up her leg from the boots… I highly suggest Park City invest in some better boots so people have a more enjoyable experience and want to come back.

I returned for my 3rd and 4th lesson with Mallory I figured I could put up with the boots again.. both times were better than the first however this time.. while trying to control movements on the board my feet would start to slip out of the boots (because they were a size too big) and I fell A LOT! I learned quickly how badly snowboarding can make your butt hurt. Even though I fell a lot on my 4th lesson I was really excited to go back for my last lesson- hoping to get higher up on the mountain. :)

5th lesson – Decided to rent boots and a board from a different place so that I would hopefully have a more positive experience. The first 2.5 hours of the lesson were great! I felt like I had a lot more control with my movements and didn’t fall.. I felt confident.. I finally felt like a snowboarder! We got to attempt a blue diamond this time around and I made it down successfully. The last half hour though was miserable again with the boots! Martin said that boots are the most important part of snowboarding and that they should feel like slippers… I cannot wait for the day I experience this, because so far walking all day long in my 6 inch stiletto heels in Las Vegas is a more comfortable experience than what I have been through with snowboarding rental boots.

I highly recommend that you take advantage of this deal if you get a chance (and if you are lucky, you may even get Martin.. He’s the best).

Now let’s hit the mountain! (after I find some good boots!) 😉

  1. Love it! Blue diamond.. impressive! I learned snowboarding all by myself, stayed on my ass for the first four hours! Sucked. Was in Co.

Wish we had snow here to learn, i’d be a mountain BUM!!!! Thanks for the entertainment! xoxxo

  2. Awwww….. I’m touched! You were an awesome student, always smiling and happy despite the fact that your feet were miserable. Hmmm, just picturing you in 6″ stiletto heels…. 😉
